FREDERICKSBURG CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: School Security Officer - James Monroe High School (7.5 hours per day 182 days per year) PRIMARY FUNCTION: Per the Code of Virginia 9.1-101 the School Security Officer is employed for the singular purpose of maintaining order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating violations of the policies of the school board and detaining students violating the law or the policies of the school board on school property, school buses, or at school sponsored events and who is responsible solely for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, staff and visitors in the assigned school.
QUALIFICATIONS: - High School Diploma or GED
- Experience working with school age children preferred
- Some law enforcement experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Some knowledge of standard security procedures and the regulations and laws relating to grounds and building intrusion and trespassing; ability to exercise good judgment under stressful and potentially dangerous conditions; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and good interpersonal skills, including ability to interact in a positive, professional manner with students, staff, and members of the public. Ability to complete compulsory certification training approved by the Virginia Center for School Safety within sixty days of hire.
REPORTS TO: James Monroe High School Principal
PAY RANGE: $23,895 - $45,900
RESPONSIBILITIES: - Operates patrol to assigned school/areas to detect and deter fire, theft, vandalism, and other unauthorized activities and conditions which could endanger students, staff, and property of James Monroe High School.
- Performs security inspections of school, which may include manual checks of all exterior doors and windows.
- Assists school administrators with developing and applying the school security plan and with other security-related matters.
- Promptly reports any suspicious activities or person(s) found to appropriate school officials, and law enforcement, if appropriate; promptly reports to the personnel any suspicious activities found.
- Monitors social media and other online programs as well as camera systems.
- Ensure that all persons found on FCPS property after school or normal working hours have the proper authorization; take appropriate actions to remove unauthorized persons from school premises.
- Cooperates with and assists fire and law enforcement personnel responding to alarms.
- Coordinates all fire, tornado and active shooter drills.
- Completes and submits all required reports and forms on a timely basis.
- Assists staff with safety and security problems.
- Must conform to all requirements pursuant to the Code of Virginia and the Virginia Administrative Code and required to maintain current certification if requested.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
EVALUATION: Performance on the job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
